Chapter Six

Vera was crouched low behind some shrubs. Wilkes found his way back easily, and she had the iron bar ready to attack when he appeared, until she saw Fiona behind him.

“You’re okay,” she said, moving to give her a hug.

“May want to hang back,” Fiona replied, showing her the doll.

Vera made a face, getting a smell of the thing. “Geez, was it in a sewer?”

“Worse. It was in Reggie,” Fiona answered. She pulled the backpack off her shoulder and set it down, allowing Henry to come out again.

“The smallest of the dolls,” Henry assented, seeing the blood-smeared thing in Fiona’s hands.

“That’s why they’re sewn up,” she told Vera. “It possesses them, then takes a part of the possessed body and puts it in a new one. It’s making nesting dolls out of its victims and spreading itself in the process. But the seven influencers probably have the dolls inside of them. If we get them, then the rest will just be…”

“Dead bodies with fingers sewn into their guts,” Wilkes finished.

Gruesome, but not incorrect, Fiona thought.

“We haven’t even seen all six yet,” Vera said. Fiona nodded. They’d caught sight of three more that she could think of.

“Would you know the others to see them?” Fiona asked.

Vera nodded. “Yeah, I checked them all out on the way here. But you saw the rooms; they’re surrounded by people. How do we get them alone?”

“Ghosts are easier to manipulate than you’d think,” Wilkes stated. “They have no real sense of how the world works. What you’re seeing here is what Mnogiye is pulling out of its hosts. It can sound insidious, clever, and even diabolical, but it’s mostly playing this by ear.”

“Which means what?” Fiona asked. The fact was that it was still murdering people.

“Go fishing. You have bait now. You have one part of the whole. It will want that back.”

“Do they all know the same things?” Vera asked suddenly.

“They share a mind,” Henry stated. “What one part knows, all parts know.”

“Then it knows Wilkes is here with us. It knows what all of us look like. And it will be looking for us.”

“How do we do this, then? How do we get an upper hand if there are over twenty of these things that all share thoughts, and know who we are, when don’t know all of them?” Vera asked.

“I also worry that we have lost an advantage in combat. The trinkets only stun the dolls. But the human hosts are like shields,” Henry said.

Wilkes shrugged. “You just need to get your hands dirty. A human body has many weaknesses.”

He pulled the knife out and held it out to Vera. She stared at it, the bloodstained handle, and then shook her head.

“I’m a nurse. I don’t kill people,” she said.

“Even people trying to kill you?” Wilkes asked. Her expression darkened. “Even people who are already dead?”

“We’ll do what needs to be done if and when we need to do it,” Fiona said. She took the knife from Wilkes and folded it shut, tucking it into her pocket.
